The background
Smart marketers are catching on that affiliates are getting more and more weary of sending them prospects ... only to never get credit for the sale.
This is because most affiliate programs are based on cookies and the concept of "last affiliate gets the sale".
With a cookie in the prospect's browser used to track the referring affiliate, any of the following can result in a lost commission:
Affiliates are more motivated when they know they will get credit for referring someone. So savvy marketers are starting to use "first affiliate gets the sale".
This can also be done with cookies, but an even better way is to tag the prospect in the marketer's system, with the affiliate id who referred them.
Usually this tagging is done by email address of the prospect after they have opted in for a "free report" or similar incentive during the launch.
The marketer to use such a system that's been customized this way, is millionaire Armand Morin, with the upcoming launch of his new Internet Marketing Explained course.

Just an update to this post, as I got some clarification from Stu:
"One thing to note.
Technically it's still a "last cookie" wins but the difference is we are rewarding affiliates who promote early by hard coding the affiliate id into their profile.
The reason this is important is because ALL the follow up we do will be sent through your affiliate link.
However, if the customer clicks on someone else's affiliate link (even if they were hard coded with your id) afterwards and then purchases, the last cookie will win the sale.
With that said, since we are conducting the lions share of the follow up, we MASSIVELY increase the odds of our affiliates who promote early since our emails will most likely reach the prospect last and that's the one that contains YOUR affiliate link.
Hopefully that all makes sense but I just wanted to make sure the whole first cookie/last cookie was clarified."
To summarize - this means that the hard-coding is for the followups, but the sale is still using a cookie to check who gets the credit - i.e. it is still "last cookie wins".
The key differentiator here is that all follow up is done with your affiliate id and so an affiliate's commissions are protected much better than those of other launches which drop a cookie early for a 2 week launch and not in the followups.
